Bio


Sarbpreet Singh is a writer, playwright and commentator based in Boston. With degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, he started his career at organizations such as General Electric and AT&T Bell Labs. He went on to manage technology businesses and served as Vice President at Lucent Technologies, Senior Vice President at Flextronics International and President & Chief Operating Officer at FutureSoft, a Chennai based telecom software company.


During his career in technology Sarbpreet remained deeply connected with the arts, immersing himself in both Gurmat Sangeet (Sikh sacred music) and Indian Classical Music. His love of literature, which dates back to his schooldays in Gangtok, Sikkim, continued to express itself through his writings. Over the years he has been an active commentator on National Public Radio in the US, appearing on programs such as Morning Edition and Worldview. His commentary also appeared on The Huffington Post, SikhChic, Sikhnet, The Boston Herald, The Providence Journal, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel etc.


In 2014, in collaboration with J.Mehr Kaur, Sarbpreet launched a theater production named Kultar’s Mime, based on his poem, that told the story of the 1984 massacre of the Sikhs in Delhi following the assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The production was extremely successful and was performed 90 times in 6 countries. It was presented at British Parliament, Scottish Parliament and at the 2015 Parliament of the World’s Religions at Salt Lake City. In India it was presented at prestigious theater venues in all the major metros such as NCPA, Akshara, Kamani, Padatik, Spaces and Jagriti.


In 2018, Sarbpreet launched the first season of a podcast titled The Story of the Sikhs, which blends storytelling, Gurmat Sangeet, Indian Classical Music and poetic translations of selections from the Sikh Scripture, The Guru Granth Sahib as well as the writings of scholars such as Bhai Santokh Singh and Bhai Vir Singh. The work has been hailed as ‘the podcast of a generation’ and has been downloaded more than 34,000 times by listeners in eighty countries. The second season is now in production.


Sarbpreet is also the founder of The Gurmat Sangeet Project, a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of Gurmat Sangeet, which has played a significant role in the renaissance that traditional Sikh music has experienced in the diaspora. He has been teaching Gurmat Sangeet for several years in the US and was invited to the 2009 Parliament of the World’s Religions in Melbourne to speak on the subject.


Westland Publications has just published The Camel Merchant of Philadelphia by Sarbpreet Singh, a work of non-fiction that brings alive the dynamic court and the tumultuous but effective reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The book focuses on many colorful characters that peopled the monarch’s court and humanizes a great emperor without glossing over his flaws and foibles.


Sarbpreet is an accomplished and inspirational public speaker who is often invited to address diverse audiences in corporate, interfaith and arts-related settings.
